moon
day soul treats
My
mother seldom made desserts, and when she did, she
usually grabbed a box mixture. As children,
my brothers and I devoured any sweet thing; we didn’t
care if it came from a box or not. But out of
all the treats my mother made, I only remember one
as my favorite: her peanut butter cookies. The one
treat she made from scratch.
I’m
sure I remember those peanut butter cookies because
they tasted wonderfully rich. Their flavor was
heightened by my mother’s added ingredients: time
& love. For most of us (like my mother),
hectic lives have burnt from-scratch baking.
But at moon•day•soul treats, we create
fresh, pure, from-scratch baked goods that taste real
and worthwhile.
butter,
sugar, eggs, flour, time & love —
creations I hope you will remember.
About
Reine
I
grew up in the kitchen at my mother’s hip—whether
I liked it or not! I always enjoyed cooking and baking
but, as the only girl amongst three brothers, the
thought of being in the kitchen went against every
feminist instinct I skillfully developed in my youth.
But…here I am, baking away and loving every
minute of it.
I obtained Bachelor’s degrees in English and
in French from Saint Louis University in St. Louis,
MO. I studied abroad in Lyon, France, where I visited
the same patisserie almost every day—twice a
day. It was the size of a small closet, and about
the only place I was greeted like an old friend.
Some time after graduation, I worked a couple of life-draining
cubicle jobs and did some freelance writing and editing.
I wanted food to be a part of my life, but the presence
of student loans and a new baby girl made it seem
like it would only happen during my retirement years.
But life is so short. So if you’re reading this,
start doing what you love. Today. I am.
